really talked about within scholarly circles.
McLuhan had written a book on that back in 1951,
although he certainly didn’t achieve any great
popularity with that one.
The debate over media that happened in the ’60s
was always hot and cool, pro and con, it was
always ambivalent. We tend to forget this, because
yes, McLuhan became a global celebrity. I mean this
guy from a marginal university and a marginal city
and a marginal country—namely Canada—this guy
managed to put his ideas on the map, and in turn
